Microsoft Teams was leaveraged to spread DarkGate malware

A sophisticated cyberattack using DarkGate malware was discovered being distributed through a vishing (voice phishing) technique via Microsoft Teams. This method marked a significant evolution in the distribution of DarkGate, previously spread through phishing emails, malvertising, and SEO poisoning. Here’s an elaborate breakdown of how this attack works:

  1. Initial Contact: The attack begins with the cybercriminal initiating a call on Microsoft Teams, impersonating an employee of a known client or an external supplier. This social engineering tactic aims to gain the victim’s trust and make them more likely to follow the attacker’s instructions.
  2. Downloading Remote Access Tool: The attacker persuades the victim to download and install a remote desktop application. Initially, they suggest downloading a Microsoft Remote Support application. However, when this fails, they switch tactics and recommend downloading AnyDesk, a well-known remote desktop application.
  3. Credential Entry: The victim is manipulated into entering their credentials into the AnyDesk application. Once installed, the attacker executes commands to start AnyDesk as a local service with elevated privileges, which provides them with persistent remote access to the victim’s system.
  4. Executing Malicious Commands: The attacker then executes a series of malicious commands. These include running cmd.exe to execute rundll32.exe and load SafeStore.dll, which prompts a fake login form for entering credentials.
  5. Deployment of DarkGate Malware: Using the AutoIt scripting language, the attacker loads and executes the DarkGate script directly into memory. This script injects a process into MicrosoftEdgeUpdateCore.exe, establishing a connection with a command-and-control (C2) server.
  6. Persistence Mechanisms: To ensure the malware remains on the system, the attacker creates multiple files and a registry entry. These changes ensure that DarkGate can survive system reboots and continue its malicious activities.
